(c) copyright www.archaeologyonline.org (2004 - 2011) Page last updated 16/02/2011 Prior to building the round house and installing the ring beams, post holes had to be marked out on both the inner ring (ring beams) and the outer wall.  The depth of the holes varied between 24” and 18”.  The material the holes are being excavated out of is a form of shillet making the digging more difficult, but it will provide a more solid foundation for the round house once it is constructed.  While some of the volunteers were digging  the post holes, others were transporting the wood from the car park to the site of the house.  The image below shows only a few of the ‘smaller’ lengths of wood intended for the round house construction.   Volunteers digging the ring beam post holes.
