Copper working
This
area shows extensive signs of copper working of some sort. At the North
West corner of the trench there are the remains of an intensive fire.
Just to the side of this a small platform indicating the floor of a
temporary shelter of some sort. Below the fire a smooth working area has
been cut out of the talc/shale which has a spur of blue silt residue
spreading over it from
the fire area. To the west of this working area
is an anomalous collection of gullies and stones which at present
indicate some sort of flue system running to a fire and sand pit below.
However the stones have been robbed and at present it is difficult to
ascertain how they were originally placed.
To the east of the working area cut into what appears at present
to be the natural shale is an oval pit which has had an intensive fire
in it. Directly below this is another stone cut
pit which has smooth
sides which indicates it has held water and was used in some sort of
cooling or washing process. At the base of this was a purple sand
residue which is at present being analysed. Cut through the edge of this
water worn pit is a sub rectangular surface. It has been edged with wood
and covered with hard clay. Only the impressions of the wood edging
remain. It is difficult to deduce what this surface was used for, but
next season we are taking out all the baulks that subdivide the Main
Site as all the sections have been drawn and it will hopefully clarify
what some of the features that butt up to the baulks such as this
sub-rectangular surface.
